Found at a local resale shop here in Cincinnati, this stoneware pitcher features a blue relief portrait of the legendary Sioux leader Chief Sleepy Eye. I've learned that these pieces were produced as a promotional item for the Sleepy Eye Milling Company in Minnesota. These iconic pitchers were given away or sold to customers who collected flour proof-of-purchase seals. They are considered highly sought-after pieces of Americana stoneware. This pitcher has overall crazing and glaze discoloration, and two hairline cracks, shown in photos.
